gasoline hymn
written by evan young
i learned to pray on my knees in a parking lot hands full of gravel and a half-empty thought mama said god helps those who help themselves so i stole a guitar off somebody's shelf
didn't know a chord but i knew the weight of a door that closes and a man who's late who's never coming back, who's already gone who left his records but he took the dawn
and i've been burning since before i had the words set fire to the sermon, let the sinners be heard
we are the gasoline hymn we are the beautiful broken sing it loud from the back of the room where the quiet ones finally spoken light me up, i'll light you up we'll burn until we're golden we are the gasoline hymn holy, filthy, and wide open
found my church in a van with a busted door three chords deep on a sticky floor somebody's blood on the monitor stand somebody's god in a stranger's hand
they said settle down boy get a real job i said this is the job to scream to sob to crack your chest like a cathedral wall and let the whole damn congregation fall
yeah i've been burning now i know the words pass the sermon down let the sinners be heard
we are the gasoline hymn we are the beautiful broken sing it loud from the back of the room where the quiet ones finally spoken light me up, i'll light you up we'll burn until we're golden we are the gasoline hymn holy, filthy, and wide open
my father left a stratocaster in the dust my mother left a backbone made of rust and trust and i left every town that tried to keep me small but i kept every scar i held them all
we are the gasoline hymn we are the beautiful broken sing it loud from the back of the room where the quiet ones finally spoken light me up, i'll light you up we'll burn until we're golden we are the gasoline hymn
holy filthy and wide open
still got gravel in my hands still got his records on the shelf still got her voice in my chest saying help yourself, help yourself
i'm standing now
i'm standing now
wide open
